K2 Base Camp Trek – Classic Baltoro Route (15 Days All-Inclusive Adventure from Skardu)

15 Days 14 Nights

Tour Details

Why the K2 Base Camp Trek Is a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

The K2 Base Camp Trek is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most spectacular treks in the world. Reaching the foot of K2 (Chogori) – the world's second-highest mountain at 8,611 m – takes you deep into the heart of the Karakoram Range in northern Pakistan, through a wilderness of jagged peaks, ancient glaciers, and Balti culture. No trek on Earth offers comparable proximity to this concentration of the world's highest mountains.

This 15-day guided trek follows the classic Skardu–Askole–Baltoro Glacier–Concordia–K2 Base Camp route. Beginning in Skardu – the gateway to the Karakoram – trekkers journey through the last inhabited village of Askole before ascending the legendary Baltoro Glacier for eight days of wilderness camping at progressively higher altitudes, culminating at Concordia (4,720 m) and K2 Base Camp (5,150 m).

Within a radius of just 12 km around Concordia, eight of the world's 30 highest peaks soar above you, including K2 (8,611 m), Broad Peak (8,051 m), Gasherbrum I (8,080 m), and Gasherbrum II (8,035 m). The 360-degree panorama here is, quite simply, unmatched on the planet.

K2 Base Camp Trek Difficulty & Physical Requirements

The K2 base camp trek is rated as strenuous. Prior experience with multi-day, high-altitude trekking is strongly recommended. Trekkers should be comfortable walking 5–8 hours per day on rough glacial terrain, carrying a daypack of 8–10 kg at altitudes above 4,000 m. To prepare for the K2 base camp trek, we recommend beginning a training programme 10–16 weeks before departure. Focus on long endurance hikes (4–6 hours), stair intervals, and cardio fitness. The rewards – standing at 5,150 m with K2 towering above you – are worth every training session.
    • Previous multi-day trekking experience required
    • Experience hiking at altitudes above 3,500 m is strongly beneficial
    • No technical climbing skills or mountaineering equipment required
    • Trekkers of all ages have successfully completed this route – including participants in their 70s

Best Time to Do the K2 Base Camp Trek

The K2 base camp trekking season runs from June to September. July and August are the peak months, offering the most stable weather and warmest temperatures at altitude. Unlike the Everest region, the Karakoram is not affected by the South Asian monsoon, making it a reliable destination throughout summer.
June: Trek is open; some snow on higher sections; fewer crowds
July–August: Optimal – warm days, clear skies, busiest season with K2 climbing expeditions in residence at base camp
September: Cooler temperatures; quieter; stunning autumn light for photography

K2 Base Camp Trek Permits & Visa

The Baltoro region lies within the Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP), a restricted zone. A special trekking permit is required – standard tourist visas are not sufficient. All permit fees (CKNP, trekking, bridge, camping) are included in our package price. Foreign nationals must apply for a Trekking Visa through Pakistan's official visa application portal. Destination Pakistan will provide all required documents, including the Letter of Invitation (LOI). Permit your arrangements at least 8 weeks before departure.

  1. Day 1 Skardu to Askole

Depart Skardu by 4x4 jeep on a full-day ride along the dramatic Braldu Gorge to Askole – the last inhabited village before the glaciers. En route, pass through the Shigar Valley, where highlights include the historic Shigar Fort, the oldest mosque in the region, gem stone mines near Dassu, Ladakh-style architecture, and rope-knotted rope bridges. 2. Day 2 Askole to Jhula

The trekking adventure begins. Head out with your porters along well-worn expedition trails. Camp at Jhula beside the glacier's edge.

  7. Day 7 Urdukas to Goro

A long, spectacular day on the Baltoro Glacier, one of the world's longest glaciers outside the polar regions. Cross the Yermanandu Glacier flowing down from Masherbrum and continue east toward the heart of the Karakoram. Magnificent views of Muztagh Tower, Mitre Peak, and Gasherbrum IV accompany every step.

Within a 15 km radius stand 41 peaks over 6,500 m, including four peaks above 8,000 m. The 360-degree panorama – K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum Group, Sia Kangri, Golden Throne – is the greatest mountain vista on Earth.

  9. Day 9 Concordia – K2 Base Camp – Concordia

The highlight of the entire trek. Stand at the base of the 'Savage Mountain' and absorb the immensity of K2 rising 3,461 m directly above you. Return to Concordia in the afternoon. Porters rest at Concordia.

  10. Day 10 Return Trek – Concordia to Goro

After an unforgettable stay at Concordia (4,720m), begin the return journey along the Baltoro Glacier. With K2 and Broad Peak slowly receding behind you, the descent offers a completely new photographic perspective of the Karakoram giants. The walk follows glacial moraine and icy sections, requiring steady footing but becoming gradually easier as altitude decreases.

The vast, dramatic landscapes of the Baltoro unfold differently on the return, making this stretch just as spectacular as the ascent.

Highlights: Concordia panorama, views of K2 and Broad Peak, Baltoro Glacier descent

    Trek: 5–6 hrs | Grade: Moderate–Strenuous | Altitude: 4,500 m | Overnight: Tents at Goro

  11. Day 11 Return Trek – Goro to Urdukas

Continue descending along the Baltoro Glacier, crossing rocky moraines and glacial streams. Towering peaks such as Masherbrum, Muztagh Tower, and Gasherbrum IV dominate the skyline from a new angle. The route gradually leads off the central glacier toward the grassy terraces of Urdukas.

Urdukas is one of the most scenic campsites on the entire trek, perched above the glacier with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks.

Highlights: Masherbrum views, Muztagh Tower, Gasherbrum IV, scenic Urdukas campsite

  12. Day 12 Return Trek – Urdukas to Paiju

Descend from the high glacier terrain toward Paiju, crossing moraines and rejoining the lower Baltoro sections. As altitude decreases, vegetation slowly reappears and temperatures become noticeably warmer.

Paiju feels like a green oasis after days on ice and rock. With views of Paiju Peak (6,611m) and the Baltoro snout in the distance, this is a comfortable and relaxing camp.

Highlights: Exit from upper Baltoro Glacier, Paiju Peak views, warmer climate

Trek: 5–7 hrs | Grade: Moderate | Altitude: 3,480 m | Overnight: Tents at Paiju

  13. Day 13 Return Trek – Paiju to Jhula

Today’s trek follows the Braldu River downstream, retracing the expedition trail through rugged gorges and rocky terrain. The massive granite walls of the Karakoram begin to fade as you move toward lower valleys.

The walk is easier compared to the ascent, and the reduced altitude makes breathing more comfortable. Camp is set at Jhula near the edge of the Biafo Glacier snout.

Highlights: Braldu River trail, valley scenery, Biafo Glacier snout

    Trek: 6–7 hrs | Grade: Easy–Moderate | Altitude: 3,150 m | Overnight: Tents at Jhula

  14. Day 14 Return Trek – Jhula to Askole

On the final trekking day, continue along the Braldu Valley back to Askole — the last inhabited village before the glaciers. The sense of accomplishment grows with every step as you leave the wilderness behind.
